2013 International Women’s Day Event
Women and Leadership Workshop

We were very fortunate to take part in the CAAWS International Women's Day Women and Leadership Workship on March 8th, 2013. Allison McNeill, former coach of the Canadian Women's Basketball Team, was the keynote speaker, and she had a fantastic, inspirational presentation about the values of leadership, communication, success, and other topics. Learning about communication, chage, and gathering with other female sport leaders in the community was also a great experience!

Why the Women's World Cup Matters

Why the Women’s World Cup Matters is partnering with the Shooting For Hope Program to raise funds for girls in sport. SFU kinesiology graduate Ish Jhaj started a girls soccer academy in her native town Rurka Kalan where she will return again for two months. Her inspiring quest to bring soccer to more girls in India can be supported through our joint Vancouver fundraiser event in November.

 TEE OFF TO FIGHT BULLYING

Everyone is invited to come out and spend a fantastic day on the green. With a texas scramble format the Q Golf Invitational is the perfect opportunity for players of all skill levels (from beginner to experienced) to golf an amazing 18 holes of golf at the beautiful University Golf Club in stunning Vancouver British Columbia.

Bullying in our schools, in sport and in life continues to be a signifigant issue facing people from all walks of life - and it starts in school. Through the Q Scholarahip and Grant program it is our hope that we can help students better understand why bullying holds us all back as a community, and encourage them to support programs that promote equality and fairness. All people have the right to live their lives without fear, without discrimination, without bullying.

By your support of the Q Foundation you are also making a statement that says "NO" to bullying and inequality. You are standing up and saying quite clearly that a person should be judged on the character of their actions, not their perceived sexuality, religion, etc.

WHEN: 11:30am - 1:00am. June 24, 2011

WHERE: The event is held at the University Golf Club in Vancouver, BC. ProMOTION Plus will be at tee #2 and #5!

'Learning from Mad Men, the Marlboro Man and Freakonomics to Promote Physical Activity.'

Presenter:  Professor Karim Khan, UBC Department of Family Practice and School of Kinesiology Centre for Hip Health and Mobility - VGH site

Date:  Wednesday May 25, 2011

Time: 7:00pm

Location: LadySport, 3545 West 4th Avenue, Vancouver, BC (604) 733 1173

Agenda:  7:00pm - Presentation

Vancouver Preview of ACSM's Exercise Medicine Opening Keynote Lecture.

Karim Khan will be presenting the opening keynote at this year’s American College of Sports Medicine Meeting in Denver, Colorado which he will be sharing with the Lady Sport network on Wednesday May 25th. This lecture is entitled Supersize my exercise:  ‘Learning from Mad Men, the Marlboro Man and Freakonomics to Promote Physical Activity’.
The presentation is aimed at those who would like to be more active but find it hard to make the time. If you are delighted with your level of physical activity come and share your tips with us. The presentation is aimed at those who are trying to influence government, health authorities, professional organizations, schools and community groups to embrace the physical activity message. What messages might resonate with ‘decision makers’ so that physical activity has support in high places.
Karim will provide some striking new findings related to the power of exercise for health domains such as brain function, cancer prevention and depression. He’ll share the data that exercise has a poor track record for promoting weight loss but overweight and obesity themselves are not major predictors of poor health. Lack of physical fitness predicts all sorts of health problems – obesity does not.

To make this presentation very practical, he will focus on ‘bright spots’ where individuals and groups have successfully adopted physical activity. The aim is to share solutions as to how all of us, who appreciate the benefits of physical activity can succeed in encouraging its wider adoption. Combining his training in medicine, research and his collaboration with experts in psychology/social marketing, Karim aims to provide valuable take home messages that we hope you will find useful both personally and at the workplace.

7:45pm – Interdisciplinary Discussion and Question Period
8:00pm – Wine and Cheese

The lecture is free of charge.  However, seating is limited to 80 people.  Please reserve seating for individuals or groups by contacting Phil Moore at Ladysport (604) 733-1173.

The Liu Institute conducts and facilitates research on global issues, focussing on advancing sustainability, security, and social justice: understood as moving towards economic, social, and environmental interactions that promote the well-being of people in ways that are just, equitable and sustainable.

Community Visitors will be expected to participate in the activities of CWAGS and the Liu Institute, to provide a workshop at the Liu during their tenure at UBC, and to give a public presentation of their findings at CWAGS during the subsequent university term.

If you would like to discuss potential proposal ideas with the Director of CWAGS prior to submission please contact Gillian Creese (gillian.creese@ubc.ca) no later than June 30, 2011.

TRAILBLAZING - Inspirational Stories from three Distinguished Women
 Erin Murphy
Erin has enjoyed a very exciting life in Parks and Recreation. She began her career working for Municipal recreation for 16 years as a recreation program coordinator facilitating many aspects of leisure as well as spending 3 years as a facility manager. Always having a deep passion for the outdoors, Erin pursued a dream to have her own successful mountain bike company, called Women’s Only Mountain Biking for 10 years. Erin has worked hard to ensure more girls and women are involved in sport and physical activity; she developed Canada’s second “On the Move” program, attracting over 400 girls between the ages of 11-17 years. She is currently fulfilling her dream of teaching in the field of recreation by completing her Master of Arts at Royal Roads University in Leadership and Training. Most recently Erin has been hired on as faculty at Langara College with the Department of Human Kinetics and Recreation.

Shirley Holloway
Shirley has been the first woman in many distinguished arenas throughout her career.  As if being the dual chair of mathematics and science, and chair of English and liberal studies was not enough, Shirley broke new ground by accepting the position of Dean of Technology, Science and Trades, she was the first woman to hold such a position in North America, while working at a community college in Toronto.  She has also served as Dean of Technology and Trades at Camosun College in British Columbia - the first female Dean of Technology in BC. In 1998 she moved to Edmonton, Alberta to be the first female Vice President, Academic and Student Services at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, the largest such institution in Canada. Shirley has been an active participant in a variety of competitive sports since childhood. As an undergraduate she represented her college in field hockey, badminton and tennis. Shirley plans to be in her seventh international masters field hockey festival in Holland in the fall of 2005.

Pat Harrison
Pat believes athletes are giving away their power and sabotaging their experiences! Furthermore, she feels strongly that the athletic world is on the verge of self-destruction. The innocence, the joy, the freedom once found in physical activity is quickly being extinguished by frustration, anger, aggression, control, fear, need to dominate and often a desire to injure. As an elite athlete and international coach Pat was successful because of her unconscious connection with the intuitive energy of her soul. She "just did it" and success followed. As a member of the United States and Canadian Softball Halls of Fame and a former professional coach, Pat has spent the past 20 years trying to understand the keys to athletic success. Pat has recently published two books, Once Upon A Locker Room and Competing From The Heart. She hopes that these books will be used as vehicles, to support her desire for change and understanding in the world of sport. To learn more about Pat, visit http://www.soulsports.ca/

If you have an event that you would like girls and women of BC to know about, please contact us.
