2012 Bobbie Steen Legacy Foundation Recipient

ProMOTION Plus presented Mitra Tshan with the Bobbie Steen Legacy Foundation award for her support in coaching and mentoring girls and women in basketball.
Mitra has been employed by the VSB as the Secretary of the Britannia Community Education Program for the past 2 years. She has been involved in coaching basketball since 1997 and in 2003, she became the league programmer for Strathcona Basketball.Strathcona is one of the poorest neighbourhoods in Canada and Mitra is constantly working on behalf of her kids to find various ways to support their athletic and basketball dreams. She is the Girls League Coordinator for the Night Hoops league - a Friday night program that is dedicated to providing a healthy outlet for kids in the community, rather than a life on the streets. Mitra also serves on the Board of Directors for the Vancouver Girls Basketball Association which, is dedicated to the growth of basketball for girls in Vancouver. In 2004, she co-founded the Strathcona Women’s Basketball League and to this day, she is the league coordinator. From 2007-09 Mitra was the Referee Coordinator for the NBA 3 on 3 Tournament in Vancouver. Since 2008, Mitra has been the co-league Convener for the Vancouver School Board Jr./Sr. Girls Basketball League. She has also volunteered for the Hoops 4 Heart, Hoops 4 Hope, and the Steve Nash Charity Classic charitable events.

Bobbie Steen Legacy Foundation Award

On November 12, 1995, the sport and recreation community in BC lost a dear friend and colleague, Bobbie Steen. Bobbie left a lasting impression on BC through her passionate dedication to advancing girls and women in physical activity and sport. As part of her legacy, an award has been established to keep Bobbie’s vision alive.

The Bobbie Steen Legacy Foundation has been created to provide financial support to charitable activities dedicated to advancing gender equity in physical activity and sport and/or the community betterment resulting from female involvement in physical activity and sport. The Bobbie Steen Legacy Foundation Award in the amount of $1000 is awarded to an emerging leader whose dedication to the women and girls of BC parallels those of Bobbie Steen and the Foundation.

2011 Bobbie Steen Legacy Foundation Recipient

This year the committee was pleased to give the Legacy Foundation Award Alicia Borsoi. This young woman was honoured on February 24th at a ceremony held in conjunction with the Sport BC President's awards at the River Rock Casino in Richmond, BC. Congratulations to everyone who was nominated for their phenominal work for women and girls in sport.

The Legacy Foundation Award ($1,000) is given to an Emerging Leader to further their education or to support programming which champions girls and women in sport and physical activity.

2011 EMERGING LEADER: Alicia Borsoi
Our 2011 Emerging Leader honed her coaching skills in the Coach Mentorship Program and was instrumental in establishing and advancing the Fort Langley's YRow Project to assist high school aged girls to learn to row.

Sabrina Chan and Jennifer Eng

This year the committee was pleased to give the Legacy Foundation Award to a duo: Sabrina Chan and Jennifer Eng of Vancouver. These young women were honoured on March 31st at a ceremony held in conjunction with the Sport BC President's awards at the River Rock Casino in Richmond, BC. Congratulations to everyone who was nominated for their phenominal work for women and girls in sport.

The Legacy Foundation Award ($1,000) is given to an Emerging Leader to further their education or to support programming which champions girls and women in sport and physical activity.

2010 EMERGING LEADERS: Sabrina Chan and Jennifer Eng
Sabrina Chan and Jennifer Eng are a coaching team extraordinaire, noted for their outstanding commitment to girls’ basketball in Vancouver. After graduating from Sir Winston Churchill Secondary in 2005, Jennifer and Sabrina returned to their high school as volunteer coaches. They are also active in the basketball community at Strathcona Community Centre and have been ongoing supporters of Vancouver’s Real Basketball League (RBL). Hundreds of young girls have progressed through the RBL league knowing Jen and Sabrina as league refs and clinic leaders. While pursuing their post-secondary studies, they continue to dedicate four evenings per week to the Bulldog girls’ practices and games and numerous weekends to tournaments. Jen and Sabrina promote an interconnected Vancouver girls’ basketball community, inspiring a spirit of volunteerism in the girls they coach.

2008 Emerging Leader: Rae Mitchell

This elite athlete has excelled in the sport of volleyball, playing professionally in Belgium and France and was a member of the Women’s Team Canada Masters in June 2006. Rae has devoted her life to passing on her skill and knowledge as a coach, mentor and role model. She is the founder of the Action Volleyball Club. Rae exemplifies Bobbie Steen’s vision of providing access and opportunity for girls and women.

2008 Emerging Leader: Brooke Pighin

After recovering from a devastating skiing accident in her childhood, this young athlete found her passion in Track and Field. Brooke has successfully competed on the provincial, national and international stage. Her main event is javelin but she has successfully competed in discus, high jump, pole vault and in the challenging heptathlon. As a talented coach and mentor, Brooke is actively developing female athletes in the Alberni Valley and the Lower Mainland. In 2007, she was the proud recipient of the ASRA Athlete of the Year Award.

The Bobbie Steen Legacy Foundation is pleased to present Emily Schultz of Kamloops, BC

with the Legacy Foundation Award for an Emerging Leader. The award will be presented at the Sport BC Presidents’ Awards ceremony on March 14, 2007. Many thanks to all the nominators and nominees for their involvement in the selection process.

This honour roll student has demonstrated a passion and dedication to the sport of gymnastics by investing in 22 hours of training per week and by volunteering with younger athletes at the Kamloops Artistic Trampoline and Tumbling School which she joined in 1999. In 2005 Emily received an all-around bronze medal at the BC Championships and qualified for the Western Championships, finishing 9^th overall and 6^th in the Beam. Emily will be starting university next year and is working toward becoming a member of the National Gymnastics team.

Kathleen Stoody:
Kathleen is a member of the Simon Fraser University Swim Team and has won medals at the Pan American Games 2003 and at the N.A.I.A. championships. She is very involved in her community, coaching the local swim club and running summer camps and swim clinics for 6 – 12 year olds at SFU. Kathleen is an outstanding athlete, coach and role model and an exceptional emerging leader. Congratulations Kathleen!

Karen Henry - Aboriginal Sports and Recreation Association of BC (ASRA)
Jessica Baskerville - "Volleyball for All"

Karen Henry currently works as a Program Manager for the Aboriginal Sports and Recreation Association of BC, (ASRA). This award will aid ASRA in providing Karen with ongoing training opportunities for the role of Chef de Mission leading up to the 2006 North American Indigenous Games to be held in Denver, Colorado.

Jessica Baskerville currently attendsThompson Rivers University and plans to attend University of British Columbia next September. Jessica created "Volleyball for All", the vision of which is to supply low-income communities with the equipment, coaching and leadership necessary to foster viable girls volleyball programs. Jessica's next project is "Peer Connect" which is a unique approach to recruiting: student athlete role models recruiting student athletes.

Aboriginal Sport and Recreation Association of BC - "Strengthening the Circle"

The Aboriginal Sports and Recreation Association of BC (ASRA) is the multi-sport umbrella organization for the Aboriginal people of British Columbia. Since its inception in 1989, it has been working towards increasing the opportunities for BC’s Aboriginal people to fully access sport, physical activity and recreation activities.

“Strengthening the Circle”, an initiative created by ASRA, involves supporting a network of Aboriginal female leaders dedicated to the development of the Aboriginal Sport Excellence Program. The mission of the Strengthening the Circle initiative is “to engage BC Aboriginal girls and women in the decisions that affect the quality of their sport, physical activity and recreation experiences.” Strengthening the Circle is designed to foster in girls and women the desire to be leaders, and to meet the current and future needs of Aboriginal girls and women striving to reach their full athletic potential.
