Leadership Award Recipient Honoured at ASRA Spirit of Excellence Conference
Oct 21st, 2007
ProMOTION Plus and ASRA partnered to recognize Karen Collins with a special Leadership Award at the ASRA Awards and Recognition Banquet held Oct. 20th as part of the Spirit of Excellence Conference in Richmond, BC. ProMOTION Plus Board members, Kim Appleton and Jennifer Fenton were on hand to present the award.
Karen Collins with former Board member and presenter Jennifer Fenton

Karen, a member of the Cowichan Tribes in Duncan, BC was chosen for her lifelong involvement in sport as an athlete, coach, and volunteer. She serves as an ASRA Board member for Region 4 - Vancouver Island. Among her many achievements, Karen was an Aboriginal Team BC Coach for the North American Indigenous Games in 2006 and will be an Aboriginal Team BC Coach at the 2008 North American Indigenous Games. She is BC’s representative for the Aboriginal Sport Circle and is currently employed as the Cowichan Tribes University Advisor. She has coached softball, basketball and soccer in her community. Karen is passionate about her work and says

"I love working with youth, and feel my training in child and youth care/social work and addictions would be a benefit when working with youth. I live a very healthy lifestyle, and feel you need to lead by example to help youth in crisis, and keep them playing sports or participating in cultural events."
Congratulations Karen!

2007 ProMOTION Plus Leadership Awards Recipients

Judy Shanley (left) and Gillian Thomson were this year's recipients of the ProMOTION Plus Leadership Awards. Congratulations!

Judy Shanley  is recognized for her work  benefitting women over the age of 19 - the Outward Bound Urban Women of Courage program. Judy created this unique program while a student at Langara College. The Urban Women of Courage program is the first urban-focused program for Outward Bound and has been so successful they are looking at its potential as a national program.
The Urban Women of Courage program targets women disempowered through violence and abuse… It is designed to develop self-esteem and enhance skills through participation in physical activity and sport. Often this program is the women's first exposure to this types of physical activity and sport.

Gillian Thomson is recognized for her work with girls and women under the age of 19… for her dedication to the sport of sailing as an athlete, volunteer and leader. Gillian's sailing career has spanned over 22 years during which she competed both provincially and internationally. She was named one of the most influential people in B.C.’s sailing community by Pacific Yachting Magazine, a local sport Hero by Sport Kelowna, and Canada’s 2006 Sailor of the Year by the Canadian Model Boat Association.  Gillian was instrumental in the development of the International Trapseat 16 catamaran class for disabled athletes and has worked tirelessly to ensure access and opportunity to those in Kelowna who want to learn the sport of sailing.  Through her efforts, the Learn to Sail program in the Central Okanagan Sailing Association has expanded from 60 students to a record 2,000 students last year – It is the largest and most successful program of its kind in Canada and is unequalled in North America.

The Leadership Awards were developed to recognize the achievement of women, men, groups or organizations, who through their work (be it professional or as a volunteer), have created or developed opportunities for women and girls in BC to participate more fully in sport or recreation.
