"In Her Voice" Focus Group Opportunities
"In Her Voice" is a new CAAWS project to talk to girls and young women about their healthy living experiences, with a particular focus on physical activity and sport - what they like, what they don't like, what healthy living means to them, etc. The project will provide an opportunity to validate or adjust CAAWS messages about engaging girls and young women, and enhance existing knowledge about girls' and young women's diverse experiences. In Her Voice focus groups are being conducted by CAAWS in select sites across the country. However, at this time, we need a site in the Lower Mainland or Vancouver Island!

At each site, CAAWS would like to host two focus groups - one with young women who are actively engaged in sport, and one with young women who are not involved with sport. Each focus group will consist of 6-8 participants aged 13-17; and will require approximately 2 hours. Ideally both focus groups will be delivered on one day; currently the facilitator is available the last week of August.

As a Site Coordinator, you would be responsible for:
- Recruiting focus group participants (e.g. inviting or "hand-selecting" participants)
- Ensuring permission forms (provided by CAAWS) are received from parents
- Booking a venue to host the focus groups (cost paid by CAAWS)
- Arranging light refreshments for focus group participants (cost paid by CAAWS)
- Ensuring someone is onsite to assist with logistics as necessary
Note: A CAAWS representative will be conducting the focus groups.

For your assistance you will receive an honorarium and a copy of the final report based on the focus group findings.

If you are interested in being involved in this project, please contact Leila Pfaefflie at leilap@uvic.ca or SydneyMillar, CAAWS' National Project Manager, at snmillar@caaws.ca or 604.738.2468.

ProMOTION Plus Presented: TRAILBLAZING - Inspirational Stories from three Distinguished Women

Erin Murphy
Erin has enjoyed a very exciting life in Parks and Recreation. She began her career working for Municipal recreation for 16 years as a recreation program coordinator facilitating many aspects of leisure as well as spending 3 years as a facility manager. Always having a deep passion for the outdoors, Erin pursued a dream to have her own successful mountain bike company, called Women’s Only Mountain Biking for 10 years. Erin has worked hard to ensure more girls and women are involved in sport and physical activity; she developed Canada’s second “On the Move” program, attracting over 400 girls between the ages of 11-17 years. She is currently fulfilling her dream of teaching in the field of recreation by completing her Master of Arts at Royal Roads University in Leadership and Training. Most recently Erin has been hired on as faculty at Langara College with the Department of Human Kinetics and Recreation.

Shirley Holloway
Shirley has been the first woman in many distinguished arenas throughout her career.  As if being the dual chair of mathematics and science, and chair of English and liberal studies was not enough, Shirley broke new ground by accepting the position of Dean of Technology, Science and Trades, she was the first woman to hold such a position in North America, while working at a community college in Toronto.  She has also served as Dean of Technology and Trades at Camosun College in British Columbia - the first female Dean of Technology in BC. In 1998 she moved to Edmonton, Alberta to be the first female Vice President, Academic and Student Services at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, the largest such institution in Canada. Shirley has been an active participant in a variety of competitive sports since childhood. As an undergraduate she represented her college in field hockey, badminton and tennis. Shirley plans to be in her seventh international masters field hockey festival in Holland in the fall of 2005.

Pat Harrison
Pat believes athletes are giving away their power and sabotaging their experiences! Furthermore, she feels strongly that the athletic world is on the verge of self-destruction. The innocence, the joy, the freedom once found in physical activity is quickly being extinguished by frustration, anger, aggression, control, fear, need to dominate and often a desire to injure. As an elite athlete and international coach Pat was successful because of her unconscious connection with the intuitive energy of her soul. She "just did it" and success followed. As a member of the United States and Canadian Softball Halls of Fame and a former professional coach, Pat has spent the past 20 years trying to understand the keys to athletic success. Pat has recently published two books, Once Upon A Locker Room and Competing From The Heart. She hopes that these books will be used as vehicles, to support her desire for change and understanding in the
world of sport. To learn more about Pat, visit http://www.soulsports.ca/
