2010 KidSport/ ProMOTION Plus Victoria Award Recipients Announced
PRESS RELEASE

VICTORIA, June 2010 - KidSport Greater Victoria is in its ninth year of providing support to kids in sport in the Capital Regional District. Funds raised locally help financially disadvantaged families with sport and physical activity registration fees. This grant funding program has traditionally been accessed more by males than females. KidSport Greater Victoria (www.kidsportvictoria.ca) and ProMOTION Plus for Girls and Women in Sport and Physical Activity have partnered to create greater opportunity for female athletes. A community volunteer committee reviews the applications each May, and the organization or individual recipients will have up to one year to use the funds. Recipients will be announced on June 8th at the ProMOTION Plus “Re-Sip-Rocate” event at Cedar Hill Golf Club.

The three grants are:
“Play it Forward” for locally based schools, not for profit organizations and recreation centres who either develop a new “Girls Only” physical activity/sport program, or who increase the number of girls given access to participation in an existing co-ed program will be eligible for a grant of $1,000.

“Proud to Play Like a Girl” - Junior female athletes, age 10 through 14 may apply for a “Fair Play Award” of $250 to support their participation in training clinics, camps or other forms of athletic training. Girls aged 15 through 18 may be eligible for a “Leadership Award” for coaching or leadership clinics, workshops or training/skill development.

A portion of the proceeds from the annual 9 hole KidSport Golf Tournament  held May 20, 2010 at Prospect Lake helped support this program. This tournament is fortunate to have two long time signature sponsors; Peninsula Co-op and Save On Gas and Investors Group, and their support has been invaluable to the ongoing sustainability of this program.

KidSport Greater Victoria has helped 2350 children register in sport and physical activity programs with over $330,459
since June 2002. They have also participated in the funding of a variety of school and community projects that have helped to support more than 50,000 children getting active. ProMOTION Plus Victoria hosts professional development networking events and provides workshop facilitators for the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women in Sport and Physical Activity workshops available to groups in the community.
