Lynda J. Cannell
President & CEO - SportMedBC

SportMedBC, a professional not-for-profit society comprised of medical and paramedical practitioners in British Columbia, promotes leadership, public awareness, and education in the areas of sport medicine, sport science and sport training. By serving as a focal point for experts, applied expertise and programs, SportMedBC serves the full continuum of British Columbians, spanning those oriented towards all levels of activity from Recreation to Fitness to Performance.
As one of the original founders, Ms. Cannell has been an integral part of SportMedBC since 1982.
Among Ms. Cannell’s significant accomplishments is her high level of technical expertise in the delivery of medical and safety services at sporting events. In the capacity of Medical Coordinator and Medical Director, Ms Cannell has supported numerous Canadian Teams at the Olympics, various World Championships, the World University Games and World Police and Fire Games.
 
Ms. Cannell has served on boards and advisory committees for a diverse group of organizations including the Canadian Centre for Ethics and Sport, Sport Medicine and Science Council of Canada, National Alliance for Safe Sport, Sport BC, BC Centre for Community Child Health Research, USANA Health Sciences Sports Advisory Board, and BC Medical Association. She was recently appointed as a member of the medical advisory board for the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee.
 
Diana Chan - Treasurer
Development Consultant
Diana is a Chartered Accountant, and has been a community basketball coach for the past 9 years. While working with girls between the ages of 13-17, Diana has seen the benefits offered to young women while being physically active, and wants to reach a larger group of young women with this message through the ProMOTION Plus Network. In her human resources role at a Vancouver accounting firm, Diana is able to coach a number of women while they advance in their professional careers and is responsible for developing programs that reach a broad audience of men and women on the topics of building relationships, communication and leadership . Being involved with ProMOTION Plus, Diana is able to relay her knowledge of the importance of self-worth and the understanding of core values and principles in a person’s life.

Irene Schell - Past Chair
Event and IT Manager, BC Games Society
Irene Schell joined the ProMOTION Plus board in 2003 and brings considerable sport experience and expertise to her role as chair. She currently works as event and IT manager for the BC Games Society, a position she has held since 1999. Previously, she served as Executive Director for Judo BC. During her seven-year tenure there she worked to develop and implement new policies while providing support and services to provincial team athletes and coaches.

Irene is currently an In-School Mentor through Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Victoria while also serving as one of two Sport BC officers responsible for investigating complaints of harassment in the BC sport system.

Kirsten Close
Recreation Programmer, Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation
Kirsten volunteers on various Vancouver Parks Board committees and with the provincial Parks and recreation Conference.  Kirsten has been involved in sport, physical activity and coaching girls for many years.  Her energy is contagious and her passion for gender equity is unwavering.  Kirsten plans to make a difference.

Irene Wallace
Instructor and Student-Teacher Supervisor, University of Victoria
Irene’s experience and expertise lies in coaching Women’s Basketball. After coaching the Women’s team at the University of Saskatchewan for six years, she moved to the west coast to head Victoria’s Camosun College Chargers. Irene is a graduate from the National Coaching Institute in Victoria, a NCCP certified Level 4, a Master Coach for Women’s Basketball at the NCI and is currently the coordinator for the Saanich Recreation Women's Basketball League. She is a Past Board Member of the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women in Sports and current BC + Yukon representative on CAHPERD (Canadian Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance) Board of Directors. Basketball is not the only sport Irene knows a lot about—she has been a national gold medalist in women’s softball and played softball for Canada at the Pan Am Games. Irene currently plays ice hockey for Team Extreme and is proud to be the “most mature” (oldest) woman player on south Vancouver Island.


Ann Oishi
Human Kinetics instructor and Athletics Coordinator at the College of New Caledonia, Prince George
Originally from the Edmonton area, Ann did her BPE at the University of Alberta. She moved to Vancouver to complete an MHK at the University of British Columbia while playing varsity golf. Ann played amateur golf at a provincial and national level before turning pro in 1997, and then started her coaching career at UBC. In addition to coaching the National Women’s team at the World University Golf Championships in 2000, Ann coached the UBC Women’s team to the NAIA National College title in the United States in 2001. Ann is active in the community by serving on the YMCA Board and PacificSport Northern BC Board. She also continues to teach golf as a CPGA professional and works locally at Alder Hills Golf Course in Prince George.
Currently Ann is on a maternity leave from CNC and will return to work in the fall of 2008.
 
Bryna Kopelow  - Honourary Board Member
Sport Consultant, JW Sporta - Premier's Sport Awards Program and Action Schools! BC
Bryna is a member of JW Sporta: Health, Physical Activity and Sport Education Consultants, creators of the Premier’s Sport Awards Program (p.s.a.p.), a physical education resource program designed to help teachers and instructors teach children their basic sport skills. The JW Sporta Team is excited to be part of Action Schools! BC, a new initiative designed to assist elementary schools in creating individualized action plans to promote healthy living. Bryna is involved with numerous endeavours promoting physical activity and sport at a grassroots level. She is Past Chair of the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity, Past Chair of ProMOTION Plus - Girls and Women in Physical Activity and Sport, a key player in the national On the Move program initiative, and a Board Member of Sport BC. Bryna received her BPHE from the University of Toronto and Teaching Certification and Masters of Physical Education from UBC. Bryna and her husband have two children.
 
Marion Lay- Honorary Board Member
Former President and CEO of 2010 Legacies Now, Marion has been involved with the Vancouver 2010 Games since the Bid stage in 1998. A two-time Olympian and a member of the bronze medal 4 x 100m freestyle relay team at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, Marion was elected to represent the City of Vancouver as a member of the Board of Directors for the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC).
Marion is a member of the Executive Committee of the Canadian Olympic Committee, a founding member and past chair of the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity (CAAWS), and a founding member of ProMOTION Plus and WomenSport International.

She obtained her master’s degree in the sociology of sport from California State University. Upon graduating from CSU, Marion took a job teaching at the University of Western Ontario. In 1971 she was offered a position with Sport Canada, a move that began her extensive career in the world of sports.
 
Samantha Coutts
Analyst – Cantest Laboratories
 Since graduating from St. Mary’s University in Halifax, Samantha has spent the past two years working at Cantest in Burnaby, first as a lab technician and currently as an analyst. While having already earned both Science and Arts Degrees, Sam is returning to school at SFU in September 2007 to complete her teaching certification with a goal to teach science and coach at the high school level. An all-around athlete, Sam captained the St. Mary’s women’s basketball team and continues to play basketball and field hockey competitively and also enjoys softball and golf recreationally.
 Samantha has volunteered in the sport community during the past ten years but is looking forward to the opportunity to sit on the Board of ProMOTION Plus as she strongly believes that girls and women are entitled to an equitable share of resources and opportunity to participate in sport and recreation. She also recognizes the important skills that are developed through participation in sport and recreation and that these are highly transferable to life, work and play and believes that this is another important impetus for women and girls to be active and get involved.
 
Kim Appleton
Program Director - Forum for Women Entrepreneurs
2007 and I find myself back in beautiful Vancouver after spending almost a year in London working in the heart of the financial district. I have recently joined the Forum for Women Entrepreneurs as their full time Program Director.  Meeting some incredible women daily is just a small part of this great role! And after a year on London's underground system, I am very happy to say I get to cycle to work nowadays.
 
Sue Lissel
Marketing Associate, Kamloops
Sue joins the Promotion Plus board after a recent move to Kamloops, BC from Edmonton, Alberta. Previously employed as a research coordinator with the University of Alberta with a group focusing on cardiac health and social issues, she is currently on the search for her next opportunity in her new hometown. Having spent a number of years on the board of the InMotion Network (Alberta's non-profit organization devoted to promoting physical activity for girls and women) she is excited to be a part of the ProMOTION Plus organization. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Health and a Bachelor of Physical & Health Education from Queen's University, as well as, a Masters in Physical Education from the University of Alberta. Sue's Masters work explored the experiences of teenage girls in community based participatory physical activities. As a firm believer in the positive and lifelong influences of sport and physical activity participation, it is her goal to promote innovative opportunities for girls and women to be active. Sue brings her enthusiasm and experience to the board with a desire to stay involved with the issues closest to her heart and get her hands dirty when needed!
 
Sara Sauvé
Consultant, Vancouver
Sara Sauvé is a Consultant at NATIONAL Public Relations, British Columbia’s largest full-service public relations agency. She provides a range of services to clients including corporate communications, marketing communications, media relations and event management. Throughout her career in the communications industry, Sara has served clients in the sport industry. Most recently, Sara managed a media relations and special event campaign in Vancouver for Team Yasmin, Canada’s top beach volleyball team. Sara also managed the media relations for Tennis BC during its 2006 season and helped raise the profile of the Vancouver Open, Western Canada’s premiere tennis event. Other sport related work includes assisting clients with Olympic sponsorships. Sara is a graduate from Queen’s University, holding bachelor degrees in Physical and Health Education and Health Studies. In her spare time she plays club field hockey and enjoys all kinds of physical activity.

Sue Griffin - Secretary
Sue brings a great of experience in corporate strategy development to her position on the ProMOTION Plus Board. She is currently the President & CEO of the BC Sports Hall of Fame and Museum and previous to that was the Chief Development Officer for Science World. Under Sue’s leadership recent initiative at the BC Sports Hall of Fame and Museum that support women and girls in sport include the In Her Footsteps exhibit and the Hero in You online lessons and resources. A respected leader in the Sport and Recreation system and an advocate for women in sport, Sue brings dynamic energy and passion to all that she does.
 
Debbie Pyne - Chair
Debbie has long been an advocate for girls and women in sport and has worked to provide opportunities as athletes, coaches, and leaders throughout her career. She is currently the Managing Director of Player Development for the BC Golf Association where she helped to create the player development division, the first in Canada for golf. In her previous position as the Executive Director of the BC Ladies Golf Association, Debbie assisted with the amalgamation process of the organization with the BC Golf Association. Debbie has previously served on the ProMOTION Plus Board and again brings her commitment and attention to details to help create and enhance opportunities for girls and women in BC.
 
Katherine Ringrose
Katherine has a demonstrated understanding of the challenges that face ProMOTION Plus as the organization works to support girls and women in sport and physical activity. She is currently the Manager of Inclusion Strategies for 2010 Legacies Now and in that capacity manages programs for youth, Aboriginal peoples, women, and inner-city youth. Her personal commitment to making sport accessible for all is evidenced in this work and her desire to build connections that will enhance the opportunities. Katherine is compassionate, driven, and creative and has a strong desire to help change lives through sport.
